The Purpose of the Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Foundation

Our purpose is to educate the public about animal health and its relationship to human health, promote responsible animal ownership, increase knowledge of animal health, safeguard our food supply, and provide animal assistance in the event of a natural disaster.

What have we done for you lately?

The Oklahoma Veterinary Medical foundation (OVMF) has worked diligently over the past few years to provide resources and services to the community. Such programs include:

  • See-A-Veterinarian
    a series of
educational programs and teaching kits sent to teachers at more than 1,100 Oklahoma public schools covering animal health related issues i.e. animal safety, responsible animal ownership, etc.
  • Bite Prevention
Video and brochure promoting responsible pet ownership and safe behavior around dogs
  • Adopt-A-School
Program matched more than 1,800 Oklahoma schools with at least one Veterinarian to serve as a mentor or resource for the school.
  • Tulsa State Fair Birthing Center and Surgical Suite
Exhibit allowing the OVMA and OVMF to reach thousands of Oklahoma citizens and school children with accurate and positive information about veterinary medicine and animal care.
  • Oklahoma City State Fair Birthing Center and Surgical Suite. A state of the art surgical suite for canine ovariohysterectomy demonstrations This exhibit allows the OVMA and OVMF to reach thousands of Oklahoma citizens and school children with accurate and positive information about veterinary medicine and animal care in a fun and engaging way.
  • 4 H scholarships
  • Veterinary student and Veterinary Technician merit-based scholarships
  • Pet memorials

What are our future goals?

The OVMF is about to tackle its most high profile goal to date. The foundation is planning to purchase land in the Oklahoma City area to house its office. The facility is envisioned as a multiuse structure that will not only hold the OVMF, but also the Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA), have a museum devoted to the history of veterinary medicine in Oklahoma and possibly an interactive educational aspect for classroom children to tour and learn more about veterinary medicine.

How can I help?

While monetary contributions are a necessity and greatly appreciated, individuals can help the most by having a willingness to participate. All of our programs require a commitment of time and talent to ensure their success. Manpower is needed to help with fund raising, video production, educational speaking, etc. Just make it a priority to say "yes" when asked to contribute or call the office to volunteer for an upcoming program. You can also participate in our fundraising activities, which include:

  • The Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Foundation Golf Tournament
  • The Buck-A-Year Program
  • The Oklahoma History Center Exhibit fundraising
  • The OVMF Auction
  •  Pet memorials, memorial scholarships, etc.

Who decides the direction of the Foundation?

Currently the OVMA elects nine member veterinarians to comprise the Board of Trustees of the OVMF. Each serves a three-year term, and the terms are staggered. Each member must be in good standing with all state and federal veterinary associations. The board and also name Honorary Trustees, and the possibility exists for increasing the size of the board to encompass community and civic leaders as well.

Sign me up!

Any veterinarian of the OVMA is automatically qualified to participate in the OVMF. Any person in the state of Oklahoma can participate by bringing forth ideas on obtaining grants, projects that relate to the purpose of the OVMF, or volunteering when approached about assisting on a program.
